Got Mulch?

This past weekend seemed like a good time to replenish
the pine straw mulch in the back bed.
Man, I love this stuff!

These bales are available at Doty's here in Winter Haven.
It's an old-fashioned family-run feed store.
They don't even have a website.
Just my speed.

Here's our little gnome at home in the garden.
Thing is, he doesn't like to be so conspicuous.

Ah, that's better.
Now he can people watch in peace.

The previous load of mulch was over a year old,
so it was time for a fresh application.

Besides being a weed deterrent,
this mulch feeds the soil as it breaks down.
It looks just down-right natural.

Don't all the plants look absolutely snug as a bug?

Tucked in for the evening,
they will absorb the coming rainwater even better.

Mulch-it's a good thing!

  1. It is hard to believe we have to start the winter preps already. Where did it go?

  2. That mulch looks good-and anything that feeds the soil is a bonus!

  3. Daisy, We love pinestraw mulch!!! Few gardeners in our area have discovered it, but after buying 100 bags of cedar mulch ($300 plus) on an annual basis, we decided to try pinestraw. We get it free from 3 neighbors - all we have to do is rake it up. We bagged it up last fall and applied it this spring. It's decomposing already and I'm looking forward to getting more. This time I think we will apply it right away, saving a few bags for freshening up the look next spring. Right now I'm in the midst of compost application. I make my own and love using it. I enjoyed your post and your garden looks great!

  4. Jane-We still have at least a month of summer here. Time flies as we get older.

    Sue-You know it!

Beth-Aren't you blessed to have neighbors who share! Thanks for the kind words.

  5. Hey Daisy...I discovered pinestraw last year, and it's definitely a lot cheaper than pine bark. I use both depending on the area...but I do like it.

  6. Susan-Isn't it great? I'd love to have my own pine trees so that I don't have to buy the stuff anymore!
