Gettin' Stronger Day by Day

Mark Lauren

It's a new year and a great time to put yourself on the list!
I've been regularly exercising for almost 40 years,
and truth be told, I always loved elementary school gym.
Working out has always been part of my routine,
and a way of
confirming my gratitude
for the health I've been given.

With various ailments over the last few years,
my goal has been to increase my knowledge,
engage in healthier eating practices,
and find a workout that speaks to me.
Thanks to Mark Lauren's book,
that last objective has been easy.

Being diagnosed with osteoporosis several years ago,
I've been on a quest to remain drug-free
and deal with this illness on my own terms.
I have a fabulous doctor who respects my decision
not to take pharmaceuticals for this chronic condition.
Through diet, supplements and the right type of exercise,
I've been able to reverse some of the damage to my bones.
I'm not out of the woods by any means,
but I'm on the right track.

Body By You was an answer to prayer.
I was looking for a program that I could easily do
using my own body weight.
The exercises in this book accomplish that
and also require very little in the way of equipment.
In fact, the equipment consists of everyday items
you already have in your home, like tables, doors and chairs.
For example, push-ups are done against a countertop for the beginner,
then get progressively more difficult as you get stronger.
A chart in the book enables you to keep track
of each exercise and your progress.
There are variations on each movement,
so it can be custom-designed for each individual.
With plenty of pictures to guide you,
each pose can be modified as needed.
Another great feature is that the work out
consists of 4 exercises with just 2 or 3 sets of 12.
In under 30 minutes, you have completed your workout for the day.
For me, doing this workout on Monday, Wednesday and Friday is perfect.
That allows me to include yoga on Tuesday and Thursday
and a daily 1-1 1/2 mile walk around the neighborhood.

I have been doing yoga and weight bearing exercises
for over 20 years, hoping to create healthier, denser bones.
When I knew my bone density scan was coming up,
my goal was to keep my numbers from getting worse.
This book is part of the reason that I've improved.
If you're looking for an efficient, effective workout,
I hope you'll give this book a try.
(This is not a paid endorsement,
I just like to keep the good stuff moving.)

Be Blissed!

This phrase came to me recently.
I not only want to remember it for myself,
to keep in mind that we are meant to be blissful,
but also to share this intention with others,
so that they may experience their own bliss.

Often folks around here will say,
"Have a blessed day",
which may appeal to some people,
but not so much to others.
I admit, I used to feel defensive when someone would say it to me,
as if they were trying to push their religion on me.
Now, I've come to realize that any blessings sent my way
are more than welcome.
Whatever the foundation,
it's a positive force of energy being aimed at me,
and I'll take all the blessings I can get.

Saying, "Be Blissed!" is akin to sending a blessing
in that I am intending for that person to reach their state of bliss
in their current circumstances.
Someone may misunderstand me and think I am saying
"Be Blessed!",
and that's okay too.
As long as the loving energy is getting out there,
that's all that matters.

Along with wishing others well,
this phrase reminds me to focus on living in the moment,
appreciating each experience as a vehicle to reach my personal goals.
I am hoping to add a lot more fun and smiles
to my life this year.

This mantra will keep my spiritual intentions in check,
so that the world can see the best of me.
So that I can give the best of me.
Because that's what it's all about.
Be Blissed!

Dream Idea

One of the blogs I recently started to follow is
Old World Garden Farms.
Last weekend's post really got me to thinkin'
about plans for Maple Hill Farm.
Especially as this year's birthday was spent
in more of a reflective mood,
their post couldn't have been more timely.

If you have read daisy's dream,
you know that it involves starting
a therapeutic farm for kids on the autism spectrum,
modeled after the amazing Green Chimneys.

OWGF plans to start a sensory garden
for kids with sensory processing issues.
What a great idea!
Once we are settled in our forever home,
I can apply for grants to get started on this project.
It's a glorious thing
when folks share great ideas...

if we have the courage to pursue them.

Welcoming in the New Year

Here are some things I am inviting into my life in the coming year:

Visit a state park once a month.

Learn to knit.

Spend one day a month volunteering.

Give blood four times.

Make our own laundry soap, shampoo and body wash.

Take time on Fridays to scrapbook.

Add six new recipes to my menu-by-the-month plan.

Read for pleasure every day.

Become adept at finding new uses for what we have.

Send more letters of gratitude.

Write one published article.

Mail postcards to friends just because.

Spend a few days each month reorganizing
one area of the house.

Change the pictures on the walls.

Engage my lil' guy in a physical activity everyday.

Acquire a bike and use it often.

Learn more about bartering for the things we want.

Increase yoga time to 30 minutes per day.

Decrease the use of white sugar.

Learn more about the technical aspects of blogging.

Revise the Household Notebook.

Wake up saying "Thank you".

Sending blessings out to all who come this way
in the New Year.  Thank you for sharing,
for caring and for helping me
become more of who I am.
Enjoy!
