Lookin' for a New Town

One of the communities we are considering
for our relocation is Matthews.
We're hoping to find a semi-rural area
with a strong local and organic food source
that fosters homeschoolers
with a rich history and cultural diversity.

is one of the largest in this area,
and one of the only year-round venues.
The best feature of this market is that
all of the produce sold here must be grown within 50 miles.
Now, that's local!

We got a late start,
so many of the vendors had already
sold out and left for the day.
We were still able to find fresh produce, grass-fed meats
and homemade baked goods.
Next time we'll get there earlier.

The local bees found something they liked too!

One of the treasures on the main drag
is Renfrow's Hardware & General Store.

This place is over 100 years old
and completely no frills.

This old canner and a few other relics were on display.

Limited hours keep the store hoppin'.

Along with a newer, fantastic library,
Matthews offers the charming small town feel
we're looking for,
with rural pockets that are still
within an easy distance from Sister's in Charlotte.
We hope to go back and explore on another day.

Relocating can be exciting, but daunting.
We plan to take our time in the choosing,
because we want this to be our forever home.

How did you decide on the location of your homestead?

  1. We planned and planned and planned our move to the Upper Peninsula. While renting up there, we decided to take a weekend trip to the Lower Peninsula. I looked online for trip ideas and a real estate ad popped up. Went to the site--fell in LOVE with an old stone house....came back from that weekend away the proud owners. We knew NOTHING about this area....and couldn't be happier. Sometimes you have to let fate interfere!

    1. I definitely feel that the right town will show up when we are ready. So glad it worked out for you!

  2. That does look like a really nice town. How exciting!

    1. We're going back tomorrow so that I can show Big K!

  3. Replies
    1. I've never seen one that had such an abundance of local food!

  4. Looks like a contender! We didn't move too far from the city when we bought our homestead. We had to go about 35 miles out to find something in our price range, though, because land closer to the city was expensive. Luckily we found a great place for us and are very happy!

    1. Yeah, we figure we'll have to do the same thing, as we want property. We aren't city folks, so I think it will work out great. So glad you found your ideal place!

  5. Sounds like an amazing place! And that general store? I love it! I wish we had the weather to allow year-round farmer's markets. We have one that's year-round, but you can really only get meat and cheese locally in the winter.

    1. I guess that means a lot of folks must can there, huh?

  6. That sounds like it might be a great place for you guys! I love how intentional and deliberate you are being in your search for a new location to live. We found our current home when we were looking for land outside of town. My husband had come up our little side valley for years grouse hunting (since he was about 16), and so we knew we would at least be close to our grouse hunting spots. When our now home came on the market, even though the house & outbuildings were (heck and still are!) in rough shape, we knew the land was meant to be. :) Good luck in your search!

  7. Looks like a beautiful town. Our town chose us. Yes, that's right. We drove through it I don't know how many times, looking at houses and property in towns after our current town. We passed our house, for sale sign at the road, each of those times. Finally, when a property we were trying to purchase fell through my husband said "why haven't we ever looked at that house?" as we drove by. We looked it up, set a date to view it with our realtor, and made an offer that night. :) Sometimes it all just works out. Good luck to you!!

    1. I love that story! It gives me such hope! Thanks for the good wishes!

Thanks for taking the time to leave your thoughts!
