From Arms to Farms

There are a couple of periodicals that I subscribe to.
One of them is Organic Gardening.
In the Oct/Nov 2013 issue,
a fascinating article discusses giving back to veterans
by training them to be farmers as a secondary career.

Have a look at their mission statement:

"The mission of the Farmer Veteran Coalition is to mobilize veterans to feed America. We cultivate a new generation of farmers and food leaders, and develop viable employment and meaningful careers through the collaboration of the farming and military communities. We aspire to lead the national effort connecting veterans to agriculture. We believe that veterans possess the unique skills and character needed to strengthen rural communities and create sustainable food systems for all. We believe that food production offers purpose, opportunity, and physical and psychological benefits."

The FVC hosts conferences, workshops, even webinars geared toward setting the vets up for success.
Read more about this worthwhile endeavor at their website:
Farmer Veteran Coalition
 found here.

May God bless our veterans and our farmers.

  1. What an intriguing idea. I'm sure many of them would welcome the chance to start such a fulfilling job--and I hesitate to call it a job because being out in nature, growing good food--could hardly be called a JOB to someone so inclined.

    1. I hear ya on that! Whenever I go to the farm on the weekend, I just think, "If I could find a paying job doing this, it would never feel like work."
      Enjoy your weekend!
