Garden Friday

Welcome to Garden Friday!
We are enjoying days in the 70's
with abundant sunshine!
I hope the weather agrees with you where you are.

The first veggie bed we planted this fall
is doing fairly well.
We have snap peas, leek, carrots and several lettuce varieties sown.

Sampling a few of the baby greens yesterday
encouraged me as the taste was sweet and tender.
There are countless varieties of lettuce from which to choose,
but I've become quite fond of buttercrunch, Red Planet mix,
Red Salad Bowl and Green Oakleaf.
These will remain my tried and true favorites.

The carrots are filling in and I'll need to thin them,
something I've not been very good at doing in the past.
We eat carrots every week in one form or another,
so I look forward to harvesting our own.

As you may be able to see in this picture,
we had very good germination in all of the 3X4 beds we planted out.
I started installing the drip irrigation last weekend,
but ran into a bit of trouble,
so it will, hopefully, be finished up this weekend.
A couple of parts had to be ordered to complete the system,
and I'm hoping that it will be as problem-free
as it was in the former garden site.
Using drip irrigation is really a game-changer!

A friend gave me a basket of beans to sort through.
These will be shelled and kept for dried bean use
in soups, stews and for making bean burgers.
I'm even planning on trying something new
by soaking and sprouting them for the chooks.

We still have plenty of beautiful blooms to enjoy on the property
as well as friendly and photogenic critters.

Here's hoping you can find some time to spend outside
to drink in all the wonder of nature's bounty.

how beautiful it is
to let things go."

  1. I've been savoring these gorgeous days. I forget about sprouting beans for the chickens. Our black eyed peas are really tiny this year, and would probably work perfectly for that. Carrot thinning doesn't happen often enough here either.

    1. Good to know you've done that for your chickens.
Hope you get some of the rain coming our way.

  2. Your chickens will love sprouts. I think they believe they are worms. The sounds ours make when they get sprouts are very similar to the excitement of finding a worm....it's pretty cute. :) You have so much you can grow in the fall - how wonderful!! I still have lots of greens (lettuces, kale, chard, etc.), broccoli, beets, carrots, herbs and even some green beans still producing! Have a great rest of your weekend.

    1. Good to know about the sprouts. It's an easy way to give them a treat.

I see a greenhouse in your future!
      Enjoy the harvest!

  3. As always your garden is beautiful. I still haven't managed to work on drip irrigation. I guess that's a project for next year at this point.

  4. It's funny, we never could thin our carrots. Rob would always feel sorry for the little plants and he could not pull them up. So cool that you're installing drip irrigation! That is going to be a great addition to your garden. Love your sunny marigolds and zinnias!
