Arbor Day

Hug a Tree, It's Arbor Day!

It has been over 135 years since J. Sterling Morton founded Arbor Day.
His simple idea of setting aside a special day for tree planting is now more important than ever.

Arbor Day is a celebration of trees. It's a good day for planting trees,
thereby providing cooling shade, wildlife habitat, cleaner air, and increased property values.
By planting trees that are native to Florida, you will be sure of having a plant that is well-adapted to hot summers, sudden winter freezes, and prolonged periods of drought.

In 1945 the Florida State Legislature voted to designate the third Friday in January as the annual Florida Arbor Day. This year, the third Friday is January 16. The National Arbor Day is celebrated on the fourth Friday in April, but January is a much better time to plant trees in Florida so we have our own State Arbor Day.

  1. Happy Arbor Day, Daisy! My property is covered in ice and snow today; no planting going on here. :-) Isn't it cool that we can visit each other so easily via the internet and share like this? xo

  2. Daisy, I've been told that Arbor Day started right here in Nebraska. When the pioneers came to Nebraska the historians have said that there were no trees in Nebraska. I suspect that there were trees along the Missouri river but through out the rest of Nebraska was nothing but prairie grass that gave the impression of ocean waves in the wind. Prairie grass was a tall grass that could get as tall as shoulder high. Now there are millions of trees in Nebraska that have been planted. The trees have been planted for wind breaks around farm buildings and most were supplied by the government back during the 1930s drought depression years. Nebraska has Halsey National Park which is a totally man made National forest planted back in the 1920s by a rancher.

The saying here in Nebraska goes something like this, "The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The next best time is today."

Have a great tree planting day.

    1. Wouldn't it be wonderful if every family planted a tree on Arbor Day? Always good to see you here.
