Happy Birthday to Big K today!
Welcome back to Garden Friday!
We are winding down our summer garden,
and the weather has been significantly cooler.
It's enough to make a gardener think about planting fall crops!
Overall, I can't say I've been that ambitious yet,
but each day, I try to do a little something out there.
Even 15 minutes a day makes a difference.
We ate our first (and probably last) ear of corn this week!
It had to be harvested early,
so it probably would have been a bit bigger.
It was sweet and juicy, and I loved every bite!
Why is it our last ear, you may ask?
This is why.
The squirrels not only helped themselves
to the first ear, but most of them since.
The half eaten remains lay scattered on the lawn,
on the tree stump and other parts unknown,
where they have been feasting on the fruit of my labors.
I don't have enough room to grow a large amount,
and it's just not worth the trouble.
I'm proud of myself for trying this new crop.
Keeping in mind the squirrels' antics,
sister suggested wrapping this volunteer watermelon
in welded wire to deter them from getting to it first.
We'll see what happens.
All of the seedlings that were started last week are doing well,
also wrapped in their protective shields.
planted this weekend.
The Piggot Pea is an heirloom variety that is akin to
field peas or black-eyed peas.
They can be dried on the vine, used fresh,
or sprouted!
Not all creatures here on the homestead are destructive.
This orbital spider is working her magic
on the front porch.
No doubt she has had many good meals here.
It's been a slow, steamy summer,
and I have been dealing with the lack of motivation
along with a bout of fatigue and another rooster attack,
but all in all, it's been rewarding.
Especially seeing all of the beautiful flowers emerge
without any help from me.
I will be downsizing the garden for next spring,
and concentrating on growing just a few things
that aren't too much trouble.
Adding more self-managing pollinator plants is on the agenda,
as well as improving the overall look of the flower beds.
I'm also considering doing away with the Garden Friday post
and creating a once a week post about more general things,
perhaps everything that went on during the week.
A couple of off-topic things:
I've been making fruit ice cubes for the chooks,
to help them stay cooler and hydrated.
They are a hit!
Our grocery store stopped carrying the Hu chocolates I love,
They are the cleanest, no sugar confections I have found.
So, my own treats have been made,
using only cocoa butter, cocoa powder (dark),
salt and maple syrup for sweetening.
I added chopped pecans here because I'm a
dark chocolate and nut lovin' gal.
Not the same as my beloved Hu bars, but mighty good.
but I just wanted to share these amazing sunflowers
being used as a cover crop at a friend's house.
Stunning, isn't it?
Just you wait until next week!
Darn squirrels! How utterly annoying.
ReplyDeleteI hear you about focusing mostly on on things that grow well. It's a lot of work to baby something along that simply isn't happy, for whatever reason. Like you, I try to do something at least every day in the garden, even if it's only before the sun hits it. This time of year though, things really are looking out of control. (Maybe that's a commentary on me).
Your homemade chocolates look fabulous. And happy birthday to Big K!
Thank you for your kind words. We'll keep plugging away at the garden. I know you understand that once it's in your blood, it's hard to let it go!
DeleteOh, those dang squirrels! It's such a challenge, after all the hard work of growing food. I can't help but wonder what's gotten them so out of balance. Maybe I'm mistaken, but I don't ever remember reading about them being a challenge to gardeners in the past. I wonder if it's due to a loss of birds of prey?
ReplyDeleteI can imagine the chooks would love your frozen fruit treats. I've only tried corn, so you've given me something to think about. I would love to read anything you'd like to write about here. Happy Birthday to Big K!
Thank you for the birthday wishes. He doesn't ask for much.
DeleteIn our last house, there were no mature trees, so squirrels were never a problem. Here, they are rampant! I prefer having trees around me, so I guess I have to make a trade off.
Thank you for visiting my blog - I enjoyed reading about your garden - it's a struggle sometimes with pests and critters, eh? We (hubby) feeds the birds year round - right next to my garden (LOL) - squirrels, deer, and the wild turkeys do not let one spilled seed to go waste. It's a challenge to keep the wild life at bay since our property was their home before we built ours. I enjoy the 'challenge' and watching the critters at the same time.
ReplyDeleteYou are so right, they were here before we were. I don't fight nature anymore, but simply lean in to what will be. Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteYour flowers are so beautiful, and your homemade chocolates sound amazing. The little frozen fruit treats for the chickens are such a neat idea! I bet you are really enjoying the cooler weather. I am jealous!
ReplyDeleteI wish I could take credit for the flower, but that's God's work! ;0D
DeleteThe chocolates are vegan, Leslie. I hope you'll try them.
Oh those squirrels! We rarely see them around here - not sure why, maybe the cats chase them off? I guess they need a summertime snack, too! Good idea on the ice cubes, I'll do that, and oh yes, dark chocolate if MY favorite as well. Your garden is looking so good...mine is really slow to come in. Tomatoes on the vine, but still green, zucchini - just a few - but jalapenos galore.Love the sunflower field! Have a good week, Mary
ReplyDeleteYes, I think those with dogs and cats on the property face far fewer issues with squirrels.
DeleteSounds like your summer garden is doing well. Enjoy the feasting!
Happy belated birthday to Big K!! Well, the chocolate looks delicious. A great idea! That's too bad about the corn, especially since it was so delicious. You are so right though that you can't fight mother nature or the wild critters, so it doesn't make sense to grow something if there's not enough for them and you. I grow a very small amount of corn as well but mostly for the chickens as the squirrels typically get to ours too. I decided that if it gets to where I don't get much of a harvest then that will be the end of the corn. Fighting them to get sunflowers has made me realize that I don't want to spend my time on things they will definitely destroy. I'm with Laurie - whatever you decide to write, I will show up to read! Wishing you a wonderful week!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the birthday wishes. He seemed to enjoy his day.
DeleteI have plenty to keep me busy, so growing corn will have to wait for another lifetime. At least I gave it a shot.
Still pondering the blog format, but thank you for your vote of confidence!
Hope your week is going well.
